What are the legal requirements to get married in Australia?

The Notice of Intent to Marry (NOIM) has to be completed and witnessed by the Celebrant no later than one month and a day prior to the couples wedding so if they’re getting married on the 30th Dec…it has to be completed by the 29th Nov.

The required documentation that must be supplied with the NOIM is photographic ID in the form of passport/drivers license , evidence of place of birth ie. birth certificate/passport along with any divorce and any change of name documentation. Birth certificates in a foreign language must be translated and notarised by NAATI translation services. For couples who have applied for a divorce …they cannot get married until the decree nisi is final and it’s one month and a day after their court date.

For couples planning a wedding, these documents should be prepared well in advance.
